Intensive Academic English

Intensive English Program Overview:

Every morning students receive intensive instruction in English with three hours of classes in grammar, writing, American culture, and vocabulary. The program is centered on readings, vocabulary, writing assignments and discussions that students would have in an American school.

Lexington Prep students work hard and play hard; they’re serious about improving their English, but they learn through chatting over lunch, participating in a college campus tour, and riding roller coasters, as well as through formal English assignments and feedback from teachers.

Some afternoons are spent taking field trips to Boston and other historic places connected to the American Culture class. The evenings are spent back at the Lexington Prep School campus, where students study and relax, preparing for the next day’s classes.

Our small class sizes ensure that teachers get to know each student’s personality and areas of academic interest.

Our staff and facilities offer Summer Program students comfort, convenience and care, helping them make the most of their educational opportunity. Studies are made fun with engaging academic activities, such as vocabulary games and tournaments, and balanced with weekend activities such as talent shows, college campus visits, trips to the amusement park and local shopping venues, and an end-of-program graduation ceremony.

We provide a unique opportunity for groups of international students to immerse themselves in the American academic culture. We tailor our programs specifically to best meet the needs of our international students. Generally, our program combines English language instruction with exploration of the Boston area’s rich history for students ages 11-18.

The Program is designed for students who:

  • Plan to study at American middle and high schools and want to improve their academic English before beginning the academic year.
  • Are successful students in their first language
  • Want to meet other students from all over the world.
  • Want to learn more about attending a high school or college in the Boston area

The Academic Program:

The Lexington Prep School program offers intensive instruction that quickly improves students’ reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Entering students, however, must have at least beginning English skills so they can fully participate in the program. One reason LPS students progress rapidly is that small class sizes allow the faculty to customize instruction, tailoring assignments to students’ individual needs. Often, students work in pairs on assignments, specially designed for their interests and skill level.

Students further develop fundamental points of grammar, spelling, and mechanics for emerging writers, putting those skills to use in papers on academic subjects. Individual areas of weakness, located in the initial placement exam, are quickly addressed through workbook assignments and in-class tutoring. Frequent quizzes and immediate feedback on papers allow students to progress quickly.

American Culture:

Students will apply their English skills while studying American culture and building the cultural literacy needed for success in the American educational system. Students will continue to reine develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as they learn more about history and culture.  They develop their speaking skills, while expanding their academic vocabulary, vocabulary necessary for talking about government, history, and culture. Formal presentations allow students to research and present on individual areas of interest.

Essential Vocabulary:

Vocabulary is the bedrock of any language. In this class, students read academic book chapters and articles to build a vocabulary appropriate for studying new content in English. Students learn math, science, social science, and literary vocabulary to prepare them to read and write about topics appropriate to their academic levels. This vocabulary is practiced in writing and speaking.

Life at LPS:

Our staff and state-of-the-art facilities offer comfort, convenience, and care, helping students make the most of their educational opportunity. Studies have fun with engaging academic activities, field trips and local shopping venues.
